Alan Miller is a Professor of Physics and Deputy Principal for Research and KT at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh. Formerly Vice Principal for Research at the University of St Andrews (2003-2008), Alan is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, the Institute of Physics, the Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, and the Optical Society of America. He has held two professorial appointments in the USA (North Texas; Central Florida), and worked as a senior researcher position at the Royal Signals and Radar Establishment, England. A Director of four NATO International Summer Schools, Alan has published around 180 peer reviewed journal articles. Alan has held the position of Research Grants Awards Convener for the Royal Society of Edinburgh (2008-2011) and was a member of the Scottish Funding Council Research and KT Committee (2003-2010). He has taken up the position of Fellowships Secretary for the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2011 with special responsibility for the newly established "Young Academy".
